Research institute Alterra investigated the motives with which people recreate outdoors. The institute discovered five main motives and further research provided typical words and phrases – called additives – associated with each motive. The Alterra research was ‘translated’ and made visually comprehensible in a book, to accommodate the organisations and governments aiming to offer good outdoor recreational experiences. The book contained images and phrases on each recreational motive, offering guidance and inspiration to its reader.
